I know it is still long time before christmas, but today I have a picture for you that is inspired by a scripture out of Isaiah that of course has been fulfilled with the birth of Jesus at Christmas
Painting this picture something else was in my mind. I will tell you later.

„For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.“
Isaiah 9: 6+7

When we look into the world we see that every ruler has to demonstrate how great and mighty he is. Great palaces, expensive limousines, large armies, surrounded by multitudes of servants. They have to accurately take care of their reputation, do no work at all that would not be ataquate for their position…

With Jesus it is totall different. He just knows that He is the highest authority in the universe (he even created it), He is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords. Myriads of angels are at His side. Because He knows that He has no rival, that no one is equal to Him, there is absolutely nothing to loose. He is able to make Himself small, to humble Himself, becomes the servant of all, can change roles („He becomes a servant and I a lord, what an exchange that is!…“), and still does not lose His face.

Paul describes it like this in 1st Corinthians:

„For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.“
1 Corinthians 1: 25

Jesus is able to do seemingly foolish things and still acts with more wisdom than all the wisdom of men together. He is able to make Himself small and vulnerable. He dies seeminly defenseless a dishonorable and disreputable death, seems to be totally weak. The seemingly defeat on the cross turns out to be the greatest victory in history of men, even the turning point. His obvious weekness had more power than all the battles of earth combined together, stronger than all the strength of men!

Fully aware of who He was, He was able to wash the feet of His disciples. A dirty work that their host did not saw to be necessary to offer to them. Now it would have been the part of His disciples. But none of them liked to subordinate under the others, so everyone ducked out. But Jesus, the most High above all, wass able to do it:

„The evening meal was in progress, […] Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;  so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.“ John 13: 2 – 5

When we now look again at the first scripture at the beginning with thus said, then it appears in a new light. A new born baby is mentioned here. A little, defenseless child. It is totally dependant of the love and care of his mother, the protection of his father. No chance to survive for itself. And Jesus is born as this small boy. Not in a great mansion, with a bulletproof limousine, with the protection of the police with bodyguards on 30 motorbikes before and behind… No, totally alone, outcast and only tolerated in the barn of Bethlehem.

And in spite of all this there are mentioned mighty attributes of reign, positioned above him like mighty banners. He is the wonderful Counselor, full of wisdom and knowledge. The everlasting Father, father of all fatherhood, who takes the lost children home and shows them the unconditional love of God. He is the mighty God, God’s strong hero. He is full of strength, has the greatest power in the whole universe, he even is the source of all power and energy in the universe. He is the Prince of Peace, the only one that can bring peace on earth at all (like the angels sang to the shepherds at his birth: „Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.“ Luke 2:14)

What at first glance looks like a contradiction is possible in Jesus. A small vulnerable child is positioned with these great attributes of reign, with mighty banners. He is the king, the government will be on His shoulders that will never end! Awesome, isn’t it?
